Oliver hits grand mark in Lady Barons' 20th win

Brewton-Parker College senior Tameka Oliver reached one of basketball's individual milestones while leading the Lady Barons to achieving a team goal in their 77-58 win Thursday night over Reinhardt College at the Student Activities Center.

The Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference victory lifted the Lady Barons (9-4 GACC) to 20-7 overall to reach the 20-win mark for the third straight year.

After being contained for the first nine minutes while needing just two points to reach 1,000 career points, Oliver reached the grand mark on a lay-up off a fast-break feed from freshman guard Ashley Little.

Oliver, a forward from Savannah who missed her first three shots, also drew a foul on the shot with 10:40 left in the first half.

After Lady Barons coach Tommy Dalley presented her with a ball autographed by her teammates to commemorate the 1,000-point milestone, Oliver hit the ensuing free throw to give the Lady Barons a 13-12 lead.

Despite Reinhardt's box-and-one defensive strategy on her, Oliver finished the game with a team-high 23 points and had a game-leading 13 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.

"That's a credit to her, because she worked hard over the summer and dedicated herself to becoming the player she is," Dalley said of Oliver, who hit 8 of 12 shots from the floor and all six of her free throws.

Despite allowing 12 first-half points to Oliver, the Lady Eagles erased an eight-point first-half deficit to tie the score at 40-all with 12:39 remaining.

"They ran a box-and-one on (Oliver) and we came out a little sluggish," Dalley said. "I think everybody but her knew that Tameka was about to score her 1,000th point and we tried to force the issue."

Another Lady Baron senior, guard Takara Solomon, then ignited Brewton-Parker with 12 straight points that put the Lady Barons ahead 64-54 with 4:48 left and into a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Oliver's two free throws with two seconds left gave Brewton-Parker its biggest lead of the night, the final 19-point margin.

"'TK' hit 12 straight, all from 12 to 15 feet out, and then we go 20 of 21 from the free-throw line to really put the game away," Dalley said.

Solomon finished with 20 points and a season-high nine rebounds, hitting 9 of 12 shots, while Little made six assists.

Senior guard Erin Reeves led Reinhardt (5-23, 2-11 GACC) with a game-high 24 points, including a 5-for-8 night from the 3-point line.
