Serving Christ by Painting Houses

MOUNT VERNON— As an incoming freshman, Chance Bennett was already living up to Brewton-Parker’s motto: Honoring Christ, Inspiring Excellence. During July 14-19, Bennett participated in MERGE Mission Camp with his church, Isabella Baptist. When asked why he chose to go on the trip, Bennett said, “I’ve always had an interest in missions work. I like helping people, and it was just an opportunity to see how I could help other people.”

Once in Toccoa, GA, his group was paired with another church and assigned a house to paint. “Painting a house is a little thing,” Bennett said, “But that little thing brought so much joy to that family.”

The family comprises of a working mother, grandma, and two children. Bennett said, “I think this trip showed them that people do care about them and that good people are still out there to help them, to help anybody who needs it, and the love of God is still being spread.”

The young boy, according to Bennett, had very little to play with besides a basketball hoop. “It kind of humbles you because where I come from we have the basic necessities and then some. Then you get there, and they’re living day-by-day and it’s just like: how blessed am I to have what I have, and how blessed I am to be humbled by this experience.”

When asked to explain what else he learned, Bennett jokingly replied, “That I never want to paint houses for a living.” He then said, “If you’re ever given the opportunity to go on a mission trip, I’d say to undoubtedly go. But if you do have doubts about it, then pray about it and let God guide you through His plan for you.”
