MOUNT VERNON—The news is out, and the game for academic success has begun. On October 11, the NAIA Champions of Character Association announced that Brewton-Parker College has earned an esteemed place of recognition on the list of institutions meeting the requirements to receive the Champions of Character Five Star Award. The Association recognizes and promotes institutions that boast competent, competitive athletes who demonstrate academic excellence and positive character values. According to the Champions of Character official Scorecard, it is clear that the BPC Barons are bringing the heat both on the court and in the classroom.
In response to this outstanding achievement, Coach Sheila Simmons remarks, “I am just so pleased and thankful for the group of coaches we have here. They emphasize character and spiritual development in our student athletes and not just winning.” Simmons, who proudly heads the Brewton-Parker Barons as Athletic Director, sets the bar high for student athletes to promote sportsmanship and academic—as well as athletic—success. “We plan to maintain our progress as we continue to emphasize positive character development among the athletic population and hope that the students will see the fruits of their labor, putting a positive spin and excitement into their education.”
“My congratulations to Coach Simmons and the entire BPC athletic staff,” comments Dr. Ron Melton, National Chair of the Competitive Experience e Committee and Chair of Faculty Athletic Representatives in the SSAC. “I think we should set as a goal to increase our score on an annual basis.” There are many who share Melton’s enthusiasm, and it is safe to say that BPC can expect great things from its student athletes in the years to come.
The mission of Brewton-Parker College, a Georgia Baptist college, is to develop the whole student through the application of Biblically-centered truth to a liberal arts curriculum in a community of shared Christian values.
