MOUNT VERNON—Local Gospel songstress and Brewton-Parker College’s own Carmela Williams has been selected to enter Round 3 of BET.com’s “Sunday’s Best Online Competition”, a Gospel show similar to “American Idol”.
Out of 900 online contestants, Round 2 voting placed Williams 34 out of the top 50 videos.
Williams, the Director of Payroll and Human Resources, is well-known in the area for her participation in local ministry projects and performances at events such as Pretty in Pank (her mother is a 12-year cancer survivor) and the annual Veterans Day Program, and she has sang the National Anthem at Vidalia’s Relay For Life, BPC basketball games, and the 9/11 Ceremony – for the last five years.
Williams has a chance to advance through Round Three and ultimately win one of two all-expense paid trips to Detroit, Mich., to perform before judges, Gospel superstar recording artists Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and BeBe Winans, Feb. 20-21. The top 10 videos will be announced on Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. The two contestant videos with the most votes will advance to the live auditions in Detroit. (Williams completed the contest at 34 out of 900; she did not advance to Round Three.)
“I’ve always said that I wouldn’t stand in line for hours and hours to compete. I stand on the scripture that ‘your gift will make room for you and bring you before great men’; however, I thought that (online) would be a cool way to get in on the action and skip the long lines,” explained Williams.

“The first day, right before voting began, I was a mess,” said Williams. “I was full of nerves just as if I was ministering at a live performance. However, whatever the results, it has been a great experience and I’ve been networking with people from all over the USA.”
Last year, Carmela performed on Atlanta Live, a Gospel TV Show that has a following of over 2 million viewers. She has been invited back this year, and should appear on the program in either March or April.
Carmela and her husband, Troy Williams, are “team ministers.
“We’ve preached together. We prayed for others together. We minister together in song,” said Carmela. “He plays the drum, my daughter plays the keyboard and my daughters sing backup. Our platform has always been ‘Balanced Family Life In Christ’, which is where our ministry name comes from, Becoming One Outreach Ministry. We reach a lot of people through our music and workshops.”
The Williams’ have hosted the annual Gospel Concert in the Park at the Gazebo in downtown Vidalia since 2004. The outreach event brings groups from the surrounding areas to minster to the community through song, dance and drama. Troy and Carmela also began the Ultimate Date Night in 2009, where every other month, couples enjoy live Christian entertainment, dramas, dinner and games.
