The Brewton-Parker College Athletic Department has announced the appointment of DeCole Shoemate as the institution’s new Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Shoemate, former assistant coach at NCAA Division II Lander University, joined BPC last August as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. She will now lead the BPC Women’s Basketball Program.
Brewton-Parker’s Athletic Director Sheila Simmons is delighted with Shoemate’s appointment. “We are blessed to have Coach Shoemate as a part of our BPC family. She is a great fit. She is a true professional, but most of all she is the embodiment of what every Christian higher education institution needs on their campus. Success follows her everywhere she goes,” Simmons said. “She is a winner. With her recruiting abilities, knowledge of the game, and overall ability to manage a program, she will be successful.”
Dr. Lee Cheek, Vice President of Advancement at Brewton-Parker, echoed the excitement of

Simmons, noting that, “Coach Shoemate will perpetuate and enhance a strong basketball program that has concentrated on character-building and developing young people in a multi-faceted manner, so that these student-athletes will change the world. Shoemate will have a great and positive influence on our students, college community, and region.”
In heading up the women’s program, Shoemate follows Simmons, who was promoted to the position of Athletic Director. Simmons led the women’s program for 5 years with 114 wins and 48 losses (.704).
“I am very humbled, honored, and extremely excited about the opportunity to lead this program. The women’s basketball program at BPC has a tradition of competing on the national level and my goal is to bring that level of competitiveness back,” said Shoemate.
“I have had the opportunity to be a part of successful programs as a player and as a coach. Through mentors like Coach Kevin Pederson, the Head Coach at Lander University, and Coach Sheila Simmons here at BPC, I have had the opportunity to gain much wisdom and knowledge which has prepared me for the task ahead,” added Shoemate.
Coach Shoemate, a native of Beaufort, S.C., led her high school team to a South Carolina 3-A State Championship at Battery Creek High School. She was named 2-time Female Athlete of the year, Player of the Year, and 4-time All-Area and Regional Player. She signed and played Division I basketball at Florida International where she won a Sunbelt Conference Championship and made an NCAA Sweet 16 Appearance. She transferred her junior year to Anderson College, SC, where she received All-Conference honors and a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Championship.
While on staff at Anderson College, Coach Shoemate was instrumental in player skill development, helping lead the school to back-to-back conference championships.
At Lander University, Coach Shoemate served on staff in her primary role as a recruiter and obtained another Conference Championship. This season at BPC, Coach Shoemate served as the recruiting coordinator. She signed several all-state players and transfers including a Kodak All-American. She took over sole head coaching responsibilities in December at the tournament at Warner Southern, FL. She led the team to the SSAC Conference Tournament falling just short to the #1 seeded Lee University 71-76.
“DeCole is one of the bright young stars in the coaching field and I have been blessed to know her as a player and then as a coach on our staff. DeCole is a devoted coach with great balance in her life and she will serve as a wonderful role model for the young women she will coach at Brewton-Parker,” said Coach Kevin Pederson, Head Women’s Coach at Lander University. “She has a drive and a passion to not only teach basketball but to also teach Christian values. We’re fortunate that we can claim DeCole as a member of our basketball family, and I am extremely proud of her as she takes on her first head coaching job.”
Shoemate also serves as an active member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She speaks to schools around the southeast and FCA camps about her faith and the importance of Christian values. “My faith in Christ is the leading force in all I do. I know that with Him I am able to do all things, but through Him I will be the role model necessary to lead these young ladies,” said Shoemate.
Shoemate holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Anderson College. She plans on pursuing her Masters in Sports Management.
