Brewton-Parker College’s Office of Student Affairs began a new program on the Mount Vernon campus this year for incoming freshman: the Freshman Leadership Team (FLT). The extracurricular leadership program is comprised of students recruited for their leadership potential by their professors and advisors within the first two weeks of class last August.

These students then form a special group who throughout the year are intended to provide social, academic and spiritual support to their peers, said Dr. Julie Tiu, advisor to the FLT.

Students must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and attend at least two meetings per semester. This year’s charter members include Elijah Cliett, Ricardo Corporan, Justin English (sophomore), Ashley Katin, Bianca Mack, Alexis Mathison, Joshua McPhatter, Lydia Nelson, Lindsay Pettyjohn, James Cody Smith and Robin Willis. Hope Williamson serves as an assistant coordinator and is a Student Affairs intern.

The Freshman Leadership Team recently visited Georgia Tech to learn more about the Emerging Leaders program. Dr. Tiu and FLT members Mack, McPhatter, Nelson and Willis traveled to Georgia Tech April 21 and were guests at the school’s year-end banquet. “This was a great networking and information gathering opportunity for all involved,” said Dr. Tiu.

The FLT plans to host a dance in September during the Fall 2009 semester to welcome the BPC Class of 2013 and recruit new leaders from the freshman class. To learn more about the program, contact Dr. Tiu by phone at 912-583-3206 or email

Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four year Christian college in south Georgia.
