BPC to honor senior pastors, their spouses
MOUNT VERNON—Brewton-Parker College is bringing a relaxing, inspirational evening to senior pastors and their spouses in the south central Georgia region, all in an effort to tell them how much they are loved and appreciated.
|Rev. Larry Wynn, Senior Pastor of Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Ga., will speak at Brewton-Parker College’s first Senior Pastor and Spouse Appreciation Banquet Sept. 21 at the Mount Vernon campus.
The college is hosting its first Senior Pastor and Spouse Appreciation Banquet Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Gillis Gymnasium in the Snooks Student Activities Center on the Mount Vernon campus.
The banquet is the first of its kind held by the college, and Dr. Charles Strickland, executive assistant to the president for church relations at the four-year Christian college, hopes it will be the first of many to come.
“Pastors are on the front line of ministry. They are often overworked, underpaid and almost forgotten. Yet in times of crisis, they are there, modeling the love and compassion of Christ,” Dr. Strickland said. “As a prelude to Pastor’s Appreciation Month (in October), Brewton-Parker College wants to honor those who so willingly serve us.”
Dr. Strickland, a pastor for more than 17 years who is originally from Glennville, knows first-hand the rigors and blessings of holding a senior pastor position.
“The churches I served were generally very gracious and attentive to the needs of my family. However, I never experienced anything to the scale of what we are doing this year (at the college),” he said. “Unfortunately, pastors are generally overlooked. It is the nature of their position to be unassuming and servant-minded. That tends to cause the rest of us to take them for granted, and yet, we send a conflicting message by putting them on a pedestal as far as our expectations of their family life. Sometimes we just need to say, ‘We love you’.”
The college has sent out over 400 invitations and expects to host an estimated 225 pastors and their spouses at the banquet.
Rev. Larry Wynn, senior pastor of Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Ga., and a noted speaker, will bring an inspirational message. In the 28 years Rev. Wynn has been pastor, Hebron Baptist Church has baptized over 9,100 people, Sunday school attendance has grown from 100 to 4,300 and worship attendance has jumped from 100 to 5,000. The Fitzgerald native is a former president of the Georgia Baptist Convention and Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is also a guest editorial writer for the Gwinnett Daily Post.
BPC music students Jeffrey Brazell and Holly Randle will sing a special selection of contemporary Christian and Southern Gospel music entertainment. The event’s meal will be served buffet, but dessert and coffee will be served by BPC’s ministerial students.
Seating at the event is limited and is reserved on a first call, first serve basis. Please R.S.V.P. to Norma Beaird at 912-583-3210 by Sept. 18. She can also be reached by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“In the event you or a senior pastor you know was inadvertently left off the invitations list, please contact Norma (Beaird) as well,” Dr. Strickland said. “We don’t want to exclude anyone. This event is open to all senior pastors and their spouses in the area.”
