Brewton-Parker Junior Varsity Women’s Basketball signees for 2009-2010
Mount Vernon, GA – Head Coach DeCole Shoemate reveals the Junior Varsity signees for 2009-2010. Coached by Candice Johnson, who is entering her fourth year as Head Coach of BPC’s Junior Varsity program, the Junior Lady Barons will have the addition of several new players this year.
Joined by four returners (Ashley Booker, Chandreas Carter, April Edmond, & Ashley Edwards), the incoming class thus far is composed of eight guards: Amber Bailey, Otisshia Burden, Jaleisia Coleman, Kieara Dexter, Melanie Ducott, Alesha Mercer, Latera McCollum and Ronette Terry; and, six post players: Myiesha Cooper, Katrina Franklin, Virginia Lott, Nastashia Minto, Ambreia Williams and Kimberly Williams.
Being one of the select number of schools offering a junior varsity program, it has proved to be very beneficial for the Lady Barons. Designed for students who are not quite ready for action at the varsity level, these young ladies will have the opportunity to compete and get vital game time experience, while pursuing the opportunity for a varsity spot.
“This JV Team in particular has the potential to be the best that has come through this program in its four year tenure.” Quotes Shoemate, “I wouldn’t be surprised if 1 or 2 of these young ladies worked their way on to varsity this year – some are just that close.”
Though being one of the largest teams to come through the program as well, Coach Shoemate is at ease due to the leadership of Coach Johnson. “After overseeing the program last year and seeing how inclined she was to details and fundamentals, I don’t think there is a better person for the job. Coach Johnson has a way of breaking players down and getting them back to the basic. This is a key process as these young ladies are prepped for the varsity level.”
Shoemate goes on to say, “I consider myself extremely fortunate to have such a Christ centered and loyal woman on my staff, I look forward to working along side her as she molds and develops these young ladies.”
The Junior Lady Barons will compete in a very competitive schedule this year with a total of 12 games. They will open the season Wednesday, Nov. 4 at home against Andrew College. – BPC
