Barons Drop Final Game of Series to Lee
Mar. 14 - After winning two nail biters in extra innings last night, the Barons weren't able to keep the Lee bats quite Sunday afternoon, as the Flames rolled in the third game of the series 10-0.
The game was close until the fifth inning as Brewton-Parker starter Drew Parker battled to keep the Flames in check. However, 2 singles and a walk loaded the bases for Lee in the fifth, and the Barons went to the bullpen. A two out flare by Lee first baseman Edgar Molina scored two runs, and another walk loaded the bases again. Two balks and a wild pitch cleared the bases for Lee, and pushed the score to 7-0.
The Brewton-Parker hitters were never able to figure out Lee starter Scott Swinson, as they were only able to muster 3 hits in the ball game.
The Barons travel to Americus, GA on Tuesday to take on Georgia Southwestern State University in a single game scheduled for a 5:00 start.
The Barons are now 19-6 on the season, and 4-2 in the conference, which is good for 2nd place in the SSAC.
BPC Takes Takes Two From Lee in Extra Innings
Mar. 13 - Brewton-Parker took the first two games of the series against #5 Lee University this evening on the backs of two strong pitching performances, error free baseball, and timely hitting.
In game 1, Brewton-Parker ace Joey Delgado was dominant. He threw a complete game, gave up only 2 runs, and struck out 7 for his 5th win of the season.
The game was scoreless until the 5th when the Flames were able to string together back to back 2 out hits to push a run across in the frame. The Barons bats quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with Brian Hobbs sending a 3-2 fastball over the right field fence to tie the score at 1. Brewton-Parker took the lead in the same inning when Ryan Lummus scored on Derrick Fox's infield single.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh, when Lee shortstop Jose Cuevas doubled down the left field line scoring pinch runner Ross Collins and tying the game. Delgado was able to wiggle out of the inning with no more damage, and the game remained tied going into the bottom of the ninth. With 2 outs, and nobody on base, Gary Stauff was hit by a pitch. A bunt single by Kale Lewis moved pinch runner Ryan Lummus to second, bringing up Derrick Fox with a chance to win the game. Fox did not disappoint. We was able to fight off 2 pitches with 2 strikes before singling just beyond the reach of Lee's diving 2nd baseman. The hit scored Lummus from second, and won the game 3-2 for the Barons.
In game 2, Delgis Soto took the mound for the Barons, and was equally as dominant. Soto also threw a complete game, and gave up 2 runs, while striking out 9.
Brewton-Parker got on the board first in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Ryan Hewitt's 2 out single to left that scored Derrick Fox. The Flames were able to answer in the top of the fourth, scoring a run of their own, and tying the score at 1.
The score remained tied until the sixth when the Flames briefly took a 2-1 lead, but the Barons answered in the bottom half inning, tying the score at 2. Once again, the score was tied going into the bottom of the ninth inning. With 2 outs, and Derrick Fox at first base, Ryan Hewitt singled to right for his 4th hit of the game. Fox advanced to 3rd on the hit. On a 2-1 count to Barons center fielder Robby Kuzdale, Lee reliever Nolan Rudman threw a ball in the dirt that got away from catcher Taylor Comford. Derrick Fox scored on the wild pitch giving the Barons another late inning victory, 3-2.
The final game of the series against these two teams will take place tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00.
Rain Forces Schedule Change with Lee
Mar. 12 - Due to all the wet weather in Mt. Vernon yesterday, and with more rain on the way this evening, the schedule for this weekends conference series against Lee University has been changed.
Todays game scheduled for 7:00 has been rescheduled. The two teams will now square off in a double header Saturday beginning at 4:00, and a single game on Sunday beginning at 1:00.
Barons Take 2 of 3 in Weekend Series Against Faulkner
Mar. 6 - Brewton-Parker welcomed Faulkner University to town this weekend in their first conference series of the season. The Friday night game was a pitcher's duel between Brewton-Parker's Drew Parker, and Faulkner's Mike Zenko. Both hurlers threw well, and the score was tied, until Parker got himself into a bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth by way of a single and two walks. Unfortunately for the Barons, he wasn't able to wiggle free. Two dropped flyballs, and a misplayed grounder led to three Faulkner runs in the inning, and the Barons dropped the first game of the series 5-2.
On Saturday, the Barons continued to get strong pitching, and did a better job of driving in runs. Joey Delgado took the mound for the home team in game one, and it was business as usual for the Brewton-Parker ace. Delgado threw his third complete game of the season, giving up only 3 runs, and striking out 11. He also earned his 4th victory of the year as the Barons went on to win the game 8-3. Offensively, Josh Barrs was 3-3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and 2 walks, and Robby Kuzdale was 2-2 with a double, a triple, an RBI, 3 runs scored, and 3 walks.
In the last game of the series Delgis Soto took the mound for the Barons, and like Delgado, he also went the distance. Soto through well, and worked through a bases loaded jam in the sixth, as the Barons went on to win 5-2. For the game, Soto threw 7 innings, struck out seven, and didn't allow an earned run. The win was Soto's first of the season.
The Barons are in action again Monday and Tuesday as they travel to Jackson, TN to take on the Lane College Dragons in a four game series.
Delgado Hurls Another Gem
Feb. 26 - The Barons were in Rome, GA Friday afternoon to take on the Berry College Vikings.
The Vikings, an NAIA world series participant last year, were no match for Brewton-Parker ace Joey Delgado. Delgado threw his second complete game of the year, striking out 15, and giving up only 1 earned run.
The game was close from start to finish, but the Barons led throughout, taking the lead in the thrid inning when Brandon Stevens grounded out to short scoring Gary Stauff who had doubled earlier in the inning. The Barons added two more runs in the fourth on Josh Barrs 2 out, 2 run home run to right.
Berry scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when shortstop Cory Kirkland grounded to shortstop with a runner at third.
The Barons added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, to move the score to 4-1, and that was the score at the end, as Delgado didn't allow a hit after the fourth inning.
Brewton-Parker Win Streak Reaches 8
Feb. 22 - The Barons traveled to Columbia, SC this past Saturday for a double header against NCAA Division II foe Benedict College.
The Barons took game one 6-2 behind a strong pitching performance from junior Donnie Albro. Albro got a no-decision, but threw 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), 1 walk, and striking out 7. The game was tied 2-2 going into the seventh inning, when the Barons were finally able to get something going at the plate. Randall Shepherd led off the inning with a single to left, and Robby Kuzdale walked. Jacob Evors then came to the plate and fouled off 2 pitches with 2 strikes before hitting a line drive down the left field line for a triple that scored Shepherd and Kuzdale. Todd Alls then homered to right to give the Barons a 6-2 lead. Ben Gillespie finished the seventh, and sealed the victory for the Barons.
In game 2, the Barons were able to capitalize on a depleted Benedict College bullpen, and roll 16-5. Josh Barrs led the way at the plate in this one going 2-4 with 2 doubles, 5 RBI, and a run scored. Todd Alls had a big game as well, going 3-5 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored.
The Barons will travel to Rome, GA this weekend for a 3 game series against Berry College. First pitch on Friday is at 4:00.
Barons Continue to Roll
Feb. 19 - The Brewton-Parker baseball team improved their record to 8-2 Friday afternoon as they took two games from the visiting Tuskegee University Golden Tigers.
In game one Drew Parker took the mound for the Barons, and quickly found a groove needing only 7 pitches to record 3 outs in the first inning. In a pitching performance rarely seen at any level of baseball, in 6 innings of work, Parker threw only 50 pitches (44 strikes), struck out 7 and walked none while throwing the Barons third shutout of the season. The Brewton-Parker bats didn't have to do much to win this one, but they got hot anyways, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits, including a 3-run homer by pinch hitter Jacob Evors in the bottom of the sixth. The homerun by Evors gave the Barons a 10-0 lead, and the game was over by mercy rule.
Another strong pitching performance in game 2 paved the way for another 10 run victory as the Barons cruised 11-1. Billy Mullins was just as dominant in this one, throwing 5 innings, giving up 1 unearned run, 2 hits, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. At the plate for the Barons in this one, Gary Stauff was 2-3 with a double, 3 RBI, and a run scored.
The Barons travel to Benedict College tomorrow in Columbia, SC for a double header that begins at 2:00.
Delgado Dominates
Feb. 17 - Joey Delgado was dominant most of the night against Thomas University, throwing 8 innings of scoreless baseball, and earning his second win of the season. Delgado was perfect through 4 and a thrid, before finally surrendering a hit to Thomas right fielder Drew Johnson. The hit didn't phase Delgado however, as he promptly got the next two batters to pop up weakly, and strike out.
The Barons were able to get all of the runs they would need in the bottom of the third inning when Gary Stauff scored Ryan Hewitt on a ground ball to second.
Robby Kuzdale provided a little insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a bases loaded 2 out triple to deep centerfield that pushed the Baron lead to 6-0, and that was more than enough for Delgado.
Thomas only threatened once. In the eighth inning, they were able to load the bases after an error in the infield extended the inning. Thomas DH Adam Duncan ran the count to 3-0 and it looked as if Delgado might walk in a run, but he battled back to a 3-2 count, and forced the batter to pop out harmlessly into foul territory.
Donnie Albro made his first appearance of the season, throwing a scoreless ninth and striking out 2 to complete the shutout, as the Barons cruised to a 6-0 victory.
Brewton-Parker takes the field again this Friday at home against Tuskegee University in a double header that starts at 1:00.
Barons Win Another Heart Stopper
Feb. 16 - After having 5 games postponed due to weather last week, the Brewton-Parker baseball team was finally back on the field Tuesday afternoon in Hardeeville, SC taking on the Sand Sharks of the University of South Carolina - Beaufort. The Barons started strong, scoring in each of the first 2 innings, and jumping out to an early 5 run lead. The big blow came in the first inning on Michael Pleau's 2 out 2 run single to left that scored Josh Barrs, and Brian Hobbs, who had just doubled.
Five runs looked like it was going to be plenty for Brewton-Parker starter Delgis Soto, who in five innings of work had given up no runs, and struck out seven. Soto ran into trouble in the sixth however, as the lead off hitter, Larry Perry, reached on an error, and a passed ball allowed second baseman David O'neil to reach after a strikeout. Four hits, a walk, a hit batsman, and a sac fly later, the Sand Sharks had pushed across 6 runs in the frame, and taken a 6-5 lead.
Entering the top of the ninth inning, the score remained 6-5, when pinch hitter Randall Shepherd reached on an error by the second baseman. Kale Lewis returned to pinch run for Shepherd, and stole second base. He then moved to third on Derrick Fox's ground ball to second. Ryan Hewitt then came through with his second hit of the game, scoring Lewis, and tying the game.
Another error by the Sand Sharks extended the inning, and brought Gary Stauff to the plate with the go ahead run in scoring position. Stauff came through with a single to right that scored Hewitt, and gave the Barons a 7-6 lead. A bases loaded hit batsman pushed the last run across for the Barons, extending the lead to 8-6 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Sharks made it close, scoring 1 in the bottom of the inning, and getting the tying run to second base, but Baron reliever Jacob Gore was able to hang on for the win, and send the Barons home victorious.
The Barons are on the field again tomorrow, this time at home, as they take on Thomas University at 6:00.
BPC Drops SCAD 9-3 in 10 innings
Feb. 9 - It took extras innings, but the Barons were finally able to come up with a few clutch hits, and earn their fourth victory of the season Tuesday night against Savannah College of Art and Design. For the first eight innings, the game was a text book pitchers duel between SCAD starter Michael Imbriale, and Barons starter Delgis Soto. The Bees were able to tag Soto for a run in the third inning, but the Barons answered in the fourth, scoring a run on Kale Lewis' bunt single that scored Brian Hobbs.
The score remained knotted at 1 into the eighth inning when the Barons took a one run lead on a two out bases loaded walk to Kale Lewis. The lead wouldn't last for long, as the Bees answered with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 3-2 going into the ninth. With 2 outs, Gary Stauff jumped on a 1-2 fastball, and burned the left fielder for a double, putting the tying run in scoring position for first baseman Josh Barrs. Barrs came through in the clutch, sending a ball out towards left that fell for a double, and tied the game. Jacob Gore came on to pitch a scoreless ninth, sending the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, the Brewton-Parker bats came alive, beginning with third baseman Michael Pleau's single to left. Pinch hitter Jacob Evors then followed with a single of his own. With runners at 1st and 2nd and 1 out, Derrick Fox drove in the go ahead run with a single to left that scored Pleau. A double by Derek Bradley, a walk by Robby Kuzdale, and singles by Todd Alls and Brian Hobbs produced 5 more runs for the Barons in the 10th pushing the Baron lead to 9-3.
Jacob Gore threw another scoreless inning sealing the win for the Barons.
The Barons game against Benedict college scheduled for Feb. 10 has been rescheduled for weather reasons, therefore the Barons will next take the field this weekend, Feb. 12 and 13, in a three game series at against Talladega College. The series will be played at Brewton-Parker College, with the first pitch on Friday scheduled for 6:00.
Barons Split DH with Embry Riddle
Feb. 6 - After a lackluster performance in a soggy game Friday night that saw the Barons make a season high 8 errors, and lose 10-4, Brewton-Parker managed to get things together and split their double header with Embry-Riddle Saturday afternoon.
In the first game Saturday, some late inning heroics were nearly in order, but a questionable appeal play at third base ended up being the difference, as the Barons fell 6-5.
In game two Saturday, Joey Delgado threw a complete game 2 hit shutout, and struck out 11, on the way to a 4-0 victory for the Barons. The score was 1-0 going into the seventh and final inning, but the Barons were able to add some insurance runs after a lead off double by right fielder Billy Mullins turned into 3 runs.
The Barons take on Savannah College of Art and Design Tuesday at 4:00. The game will be played at Grayson Stadium in Savannah, GA.
Weather Forces Game Change
Feb. 4 - Due to some anticipated rain fall tomorrow evening in Daytona Beach, the game against Embry-Riddle has been moved up to a 5:00 start.
Barons Begin Season with 2 Wins
Jan. 30 - A full helping of rain overnight couldn't spoil opening day for the Barons as Edward Waters College ended up on the wrong end of two well played games Saturday afternoon in Mt. Vernon. Game 1 went to the Barons 16-1. Drew Parker took the hill for the Barons in game 1, and he never struggled. His final line for the evening was 5 innings, 1 run, on 2 hits with 6 strikouts, and 0 walks. A solid pitching performance to say the least, but the offense stole the show in this one, as the Barons combined for 16 runs on 13 hits including 4 for extra bases. Kale Lewis led the way for Brewton-Parker going 3-3, with a double, 4 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Valdosta State transfer Robby Kuzdale also played well in his Brewton-Parker debut, going 2-3, with a walk, and a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored.
Game 2 was more of the same, as the Barons continued to pile up runs, and ended the evening with an 11-2 victory. Ricky Rogers got the start in game 2, and in 5 and 2/3 innings of work, gave up 2 runs (both unearned) on 2 hits, and struck out 8 while walking none. Joey Delgado finished the sixth, and Delgis Soto struck out the side in the seventh to clinch the victory for Brewton-Parker.
The Barons will next travel to Daytona Beach to take on nationally ranked Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a 3 game series Feb. 5 and 6, with a single game Friday beginning at 7:00, and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00.

Conference Tournament a Success for the Barons
It would have taken more than one or two breaks for the Barons to break through and win the Conference Tournament this year, but the Barons were able to hold their heads high after a terrific showing at this years tournament held Apr. 29-May 3 at Golden Park in Columbus, GA.
In the opening round, the No. 8 seeded Barons beat the regular season champions, and No.1 seeded Berry Vikings, in what was undoubtedly the upset of the tournament. Randy Hamrick pitched a gem for the Barons in the upset, throwing a complete game 4 hitter and only allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, as the the Barons upended the Vikings 5-2.
In the second round, the Barons ran into a tough Auburn University-Montgomery team and fell 11-4 to drop into the losers bracket.
Out of pitching, but not quite ready to go home, the Barons fought hard against Lee, but just didn't have enough, and fell 23-15 in what ended up being the highest scoring game of the tournament.
Brewton-Parker went home with there heads held high, as Randy Hamrick was named a Second Team All-Conference Pitcher, Eric Shepherd was named to the Champion of Character Team, and the team claimed their first postseason victory in nearly a decade.
Berry Wins Conference and Completes Sweep
Box Score
Apr. 24 - Berry College completed the sweep of the Brewton-Parker Barons Friday afternoon, and in the process clinched the regular season conference championship.
The Barons took an early 1-0 lead into the thrid inning, but two costly errors led to 5 runs in the inning, and the Barons were never able to threaten after that. The Vikings added 4 more runs in the seventh, and 1 in the eighth to make the score 10-1.
Despite the loss, the Barons qualified for the SSAC conference tournament that starts on Wednesday in Columbus, GA. Information on the tournament can be found by clicking here.
This was the last home game for four Brewton-Parker seniors that were recognized before the game. Kyle Smith, a catcher from Clearmont was 1-3 on the day. Patrick McDonald, normally a relief pitcher for the Barons, got his first start of the season at third base and went 2-4 on the day. Phil Merrill, another senior started in right field, and made two spectacular diving plays. Randy Hamrick was the only Brewton-Parker senior not to make an appearance in the game.
Hamrick will start the first game of the conference tournament on Wednesday in Columbus at 4:00.
