Berry Wins Conference and Completes Sweep
Box Score
Apr. 24 - Berry College completed the sweep of the Brewton-Parker Barons Friday afternoon, and in the process clinched the regular season conference championship.
The Barons took an early 1-0 lead into the thrid inning, but two costly errors led to 5 runs in the inning, and the Barons were never able to threaten after that. The Vikings added 4 more runs in the seventh, and 1 in the eighth to make the score 10-1.

Barons Swept by Berry in Conference Double Header
Box Score Game 1 Box Score Game 2
Apr. 23 - It was a tough day for the Barons. Game 1 saw the Barons give up 17 runs on 18 hits to the visiting Berry College Vikings, while game 2 was an extra inning heartbreaker that saw the Barons let a 6-1 lead slip away before losing 7-6 in 8 innings.
Michael Herring threw well again for the Barons starting game 2 and throwing 3 innings. He ran into trouble in the fourth, and was pulled with a 6-3 lead and runners at second and third and nobody out. Brewton-Parker ace Randy Hamrick came on to try and stop the bleeding, but a 1 out ground ball at the shortstop took just a big enough hop to get into the outfield to score both runs, and tighten the score.
The Vikings scored again in the fifth when strike three got away from catcher John Hammock allowing the tying run to score from third. After scoring 6 runs in the second inning, the Barons couldn't figure out Berry reliever Matt McCalley who shut down the Barons for 6 innings.
A two out single by Vikings lead off hitter Harman Watkins plated the go ahead run in the top of the eighth, and the Barons went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
The loss sends the Barons to 26-25 on the season, and 8-18 in SSAC play. The Barons will wrap up the regular season tomorrow in the series finale with the Vikings at 1:00.

Feb. 28 - Despite a solid pitching performance from starting pitcher Randy Hamrick in game 1, the Barons couldn't quite do enough to win Saturday on a rain soaked evening in Cleveland, TN.
In game 1, Randy Hamrick struck out 8 in 8 1/3 innings of work, but three costly errors proved to be the difference in a tight 5-4 ballgame.
With the score tied at 4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Hamrick still on the mound, Julian Alvarez reached second base on a dropped fly ball in the outfield. Hamrick struck out the next batter, and then Ross Collins reached first on an infield single. The Barons then went to the bullpen, and with runners at first and third, Phil Merrill got Jeff Ramirez to pop out to the catcher on the first pitch he threw. With 2 outs and the winning run at third base, Brian Bistagne took the first pitch he saw into shallow left field to drive in the game winning run.
Game 2 started poorly for Brewton-Parker, and the Barons were never able to recover. Starting pitcher Chris Graves only managed to get 1 out in the first inning, but gave up 6 runs on 4 hits. Kyle Mercer was first out of the bullpen, but didn't have much more luck. He also only managed to retire one Lee batter, before walking the next two to load the bases. Mitch Brown came in next, and was finally able to end the inning, but not before giving up a grand slam to Lee first baseman Chris Warters. The Baron bats appeared ready to pick up where they left off the night before in game 1 of the doubleheader, with Blake Sanders reaching on a single, and then scoring on a wild pitch by Lions pitcher Mark Barnwell. After that however, Barnwell settled down, and was able to keep the Barons from scoring into the seventh inning. Chris Graves picked up the loss for the Barons giving up 7 runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. The Barons were able to make a game of it in the seventh. After loading the bases, the Barons finally got into the Lions bullpen, and Brandon Stevens took a 1-1 fastball and hit it off the scoreboard to make it a 7-5 ballgame. Unfortunately, it turned out to be too little too late, as two batters later, Kale Lewis grounded into a game ending double play.
Game 2 was a different story for the Barons as Ben Gillespie again performed well on the mound, going 5 innings and giving up only 1 hit. The Barons scored early and often in this one, beating the Lions by a score of 10-0. Kyle Smith drove in 3 runs in the first inning with a bases loaded double to center. Kale Lewis also drove in 3 on the day, going 2-3 with a double of his own.
The Barons now await the University of South Carolina-Beaufort on Tuesday at 6:00. The game will again be broadcast on the web. Click the link above for more details.

Barons Split with Warriors in Double Header
Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score
Jan. 31 - A complete game gem by freshman pitcher Chris Graves led the Barons to victory in game 1 of a double header with Webber University on Saturday. In his first collegiate start, Graves went the distance, allowing 5 hits, with 4 strikeouts, and only surrendering 1 walk. At the plate, Derrick Fox continued to provide a punch in the Barons lineup going 3-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Brandon Stevens also took advantage of his first start of the young baseball season going 3-4 with a homerun, 3 runs scored, and an RBI.
In game two, the Barons jumped out to an early lead on Gary Stauff's two-run homer in the first, but the lead would be short lived. Gary's brother Brian got the start in game 2, but found trouble early as the second batter of the game lined a hard shot off of his ankle. Brian bounced back to finish the inning, but his ankle continued to give him problems and he had to come out of the game in the second.
The Warrior bats proved to be too much for the Baron bullpen on this day as Webber ended up with 14 runs on 13 hits. The Baron defense also commited an uncharacteristic 5 errors en route to a 14-5 defeat, and the Baron's first loss of the season.
The Barons will return to the field Tuesday as they take on intra-state rival SCAD at 4:00 in Savannah, GA. You can listen live by clicking on the Baron link on the right side of this page.
